In the short story “St Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell, the main character Claudette was successfully integrated into human society throughout the story. In each epigraph she would notice new changes in her personality. She struggled to figure out the ladylike ways she had to become to not let down her parents. But eventually she finds out how much she had to give to become a well behaved wolf girl. The girls at first were having fun by “tearing through the austere rooms, overturning dresser drawers, pawing through the neat piles of starched underwear, and smashing light bulbs with their bare fists” and they marked their territory by “spraying exuberant yellow steams all over the bunks”.
To move one-step up can sometimes mean pushing someone else down. In Karen Russell’s story,“St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” she conveys this adage through the story of girls who were raised by wolves for the first part of their lives. The story is told through the voice of one specific character, whose name is Claudette. She is the middle sister between Jeanette, the oldest, and Mirabella, the youngest.
In St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, a group of 15 girls were introduced to the home. In the story, only a few of those girls were focused on. This is because they wanted to show the range of development between the girls. Some never learned how to be civilized and human, and others did very well on learning how to be human. The story mainly focuses on Claudette, Mirabella, and Jeanette.
Howling Wolf and John Taylor both created amazing works of art. Most in particular would be The Treaty Signing at Medicine Lodge Creek. Both pieces portrayed similar content but the form and point of view was different. John Taylor was a journalist and Howling Wolf was the son of the Cheyenne Chief Eagle Head. Two men from very different cultures created images based on their knowledge of the event but in a style that represented their background.
Karen Russell uses epigraphs from The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock to organize her short story, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves.” The epigraphs provide short descriptions of how the humans running the school think the girls will develop at particular stages of the girls’ education. Each epigraph is followed by the memories of Claudette, the narrator of the story, who was a student at St. Lucy’s. Claudette’s development sometimes mirrors the stages described in the epigraphs, but often differs in significant ways. As a whole, the epigraphs do not reliably describe Claudette’s development.

Throughout the book, Mowat uses the rhetorical strategies pathos, logos, and personification to disprove the misconception about wolves. The book is about a scientist (Farley Mowat) that flies into the Canadian Barrens in order to research wolves. His goal is to prove that wolves are killing thousands of caribou for sport, but he find that the wolves are not to blame for the decrease in caribou populations.
Feeding the Wolf by Greg Cantrell is about John B Rayner Texas Politician who was born in North Carolina to parents Kenneth Rayner and Mary Hicks who were mixed race. He was a Texas politician who believed that the civil war was what put an end to Slavery. Rayner was born as a slave in 1859 father of Rayner a slave as well and a man from Raleigh North Carolina later was known as leader of nativist anti-immigration. Although prejudice existed against African Americans during this era Rayner was able to rise to public prominence during the other half of the 19th century in Texas. John B Rayner was a politically impassioned politician who exceeded the expectation society extended to African Americans.
How may one feel if everything known strips away from them? In St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, a short story by Karen Russell, the wolf pack goes to St. Lucy’s Home to become more civilized. As the journey continues, Claudette learns how to successfully leave her origins and adapt to human life. In the early stages of the story, Claudette faces many challenges whether it involves identity, family, or overstimulation.
Most people do not have to remind themselves of things like not chewing on their shoes or being shunned, but in “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell, Claudette is forced to worry about both, along with many more. Through Claudette’s journey she is faced with several obstacles and challenges that test her commitment and determination to become “civilized and ladylike, couth and kempt” (237). Claudette makes the transition from wolf to human girl by beginning to act more civilized with a changed mindset and separating herself from the pack. Throughout this story, the wolf pack is forced to go through a drastic change in their lives.
Through the story "Julie of The wolves", I think the character Miyax, who likes living on the tundra but she thought about her father in the past. The fact that Julie has never seen these things makes even her town in Alaska seem painfully behind the times. For example, Miyax is in the middle of a battle between looked forward to come back her village but did not leave the wolves in tundra. A similar situation to me because I lived in America but I missed my grandmother in my country. Moreover, I chose to stay in America with my parents like Miyax did in the story, Another example, I felt there was the difficulty of the choice two different parts of my life.
Also, with the help of Ootek, a local Eskimo he was able to understand how wolves communicate and hunt, and he saw that these wolves were not a tremendous threat to the caribou. This book gives the reader a view into the life of these wild animals and how they all work together in their unique environment. Mowat had many doubts, but he slowly understood the truth about wolves. He also spent time following the wolves as they hunted and he examined their techniques. Mowat even experienced close up encounters and the wolves did not treat him like a foreigner.
To respond to both Mary Katherine and Emma Grace... Mary Katherine, I believe the first part of your critique of Emma Grace's post is misplaced. If I am correct, the first two lines of your second paragraph in your response suggests that Emma Grace came to the conclusion that the ascetic life is one that lacks work. Considering Emma Grace says the following " But is he calling them not to work? Absolutely not" and ends her post with "It seems that Jesus is calling people to work," I first thought I had misread your post.
The wolf population has risen in the last couple reasons for many reasons. One of the reasons is they are rising because of not being hunted and nothing happening to them. Another reason is the deer population is rising which leads to more wolves and with more wolves there is a higher rate of livestock killed. With more wolves in an area there is less habitat for them so they have to travel out and find new area to live. Now that there is less habitats they are traveling closer to cities and are getting comfortable with humans.
A human’s emotions can be their greatest ally or worst enemy. Positive emotions such as desire and satisfaction primarily assume the role of motivation within a person. However, negative emotions possess an even greater motivational impact due to their ability to drive a person beyond their personal limits. For example, shame is a devastating emotion that causes feelings of inadequacy and failure. As a result, people strive to prevent shame to themselves and others at all costs.
