Courage is where an individual has the ability and will to stand alone and not in the crowd. Which Julie shows throughout the story by showing how her power burned bigger, and bigger to fight the fire on the outside. She is more courageous than any others. Julie is outspoken for a woman of her time, which is courageous because she’s reaching out to be heard. Julie is willing to speak what she knows, even in the face of danger or suspicion. Which she did by suffering everyday in Oramie from being interrogated and tortured. She didn’t just want justice for herself, she wanted it for others too. Julie treated her captors this way because the way they treated her and she is “sure that part of the reason she’s treated as such a dangerous lunatic, apart from biting that policeman when she was arrested, is because she’s always so foul-mouthed and foul-tempered” (Wein’s 88). Julie is a very courageous woman for her time, which she shows her determination that she’ll do anything to keep others safe during this dangerous time.
