In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.

Many characters in Harper Lee’s mid 20th century novel To Kill a Mockingbird display courage in numerous ways. One character however, jumps out. When first reading the book, most people would say that courage is displayed by those like Jem, Scout, Tom, or Atticus.
In TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD courage is bravery and taking danger head on. Courage is when you get attacked you fight back. In TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD courage is defined in Jem when Bob Ewell tried to kill them and he fought back. Courage is knowing you could die or get badly injured and going on with it anyway.

Webster Dictionary states that courage is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Douglass is one of many people that are a living definition for this word. Quisidentaly it turns out the very presence of these children is what persuades others that they need to take sides to protect the children and, quickly, the town. Newspaperman Reynard Alexander says early on that he intends to remain neutral on the Klan issue “Until I have reason to do otherwise.” (p26). He soon witnesses the need to speak up on behalf of the children, the outsiders, and his own newspaper (p55).

Humans have the attribute of courage within them; what defines someone is if they allow the characteristic to shine or to hide within them. Courage is a very powerful and impactful word that allows people to complete the daily tasks contained within their typical lives and allows them to complete the hard times when they obtain fear. There are numerous ways to define courage to get a better grasp on the understanding of what this powerful and impacting term truly represents.
In James Baldwin’s “Letter to my nephew”, he communicates to his nephew, that he needs to have enough courage to fight segregation of the 60s. No matter the hardships, that may come as the result of him pursuing something he believes in. “To act is to be committed and to be committed is to be in danger. ”from Baldwin’s letter mimics Atticus’ definition of “courage”.
Courage is one of the defining elements of the human spirit. It is one of the driving forces of human progress. Without it, human beings would not be able to move forward and discover new things. It is through courage that humans ask questions and dare to seek the answer. Throughout American History, we see these examples of courage at work, but perhaps we see the greatest concentration of these events in the lives of the American slaves.
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. An ordeal or circumstance that can bring out this instantaneous bravery and audacity inside of someone. Courage can be defined by something everyone wishes to display. Not only is it an attribute of good character, but it's what makes us worthy of respect. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters would not have been able to make it without having and acting upon courage.
Courage is having the ability to act, despite fear, pain, or uncertainty. Courage does not suppress fear but allows one to continue in the face of fear.
