In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” there was a lot of courage. Courage means the ability to do something that frightens one. It takes a brave person to show courage. In the book a lot of the characters showed courage in their own way. More into the book, you’ll see more courage from the characters.

Many characters in Harper Lee’s mid 20th century novel To Kill a Mockingbird display courage in numerous ways. One character however, jumps out. When first reading the book, most people would say that courage is displayed by those like Jem, Scout, Tom, or Atticus.

In chapter one it explains, “It took Jem three days to get up the nerve. I suppose he loved honor more than his head, for Dill wore him down easily: “You’re scared,” Dill said, the first day.

Atticus, Scout, and Boo Radley are all characters that display courage in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Courage is being afraid of something, but having the bravery to go against it. Jem Finch started his life off not really understanding this true meaning. He saw courage as doing something no one else would do, like running up to Boo Radley’s house and hitting the wall. Throughout the novel, he learned that this was only childish, and true bravery is harder to come by. Atticus helps show him the real meaning through examples that happen in their lives, and Jem begins to grow up.
According to Atticus, this is the ability to face adversity and go through with something honourable, even though you realize that it is impossible to win. There are quite a few characters in the book, which show some kind of courage, but there is one in particular, Atticus. Harper Lee made Atticus the hero of moral and a symbol of courage in her novel. He is the figurehead for all three kinds of courage I mentioned. For one he confronts a rabid dog, which displays physical courage.
Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee described courage as, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Jackson). Courage is when you keep on trekking, no matter what. Even if the odds are stacked against you, or every attempt you have made in the past did not work out. Courage is not apologizing for standing up for something you believe in.
Even though he knew he would lose the case, he pushed on. As Scout said during the trial, “It was like watching Atticus walk into the street, raise a rifle to his shoulder and pull the trigger, but watching all the time knowing the gun was empty.” (282) From the very beginning, Atticus expected he would suffer defeat, but he persevered to the end, showing a courage that many people would not soon forget.
Courage helps to identify and develop the true intrinsic forces of man to fight the vicissitudes and meanders of life. With courage, even in a state of weakness, one always feels strong; in a state of desperation. An example is when Uncle Jack first talk about the trial he says "Atticus, how bad is this going to be?" Atticus replies, "It couldn't be worse." He says this because it's a while woman's word against a black man's.
