Courage is not cowardice. Weakness is not courage. It is not hiding in the shadows, or giving into fear. Timidity is not associated with it. Courage is not David running away from Goliath, or Malala Yousafzai not standing up for her beliefs on girls’ education. It is how the real stories go. Enduring and unwavering amidst terror, despair, pain, or grief is courageous. As William Faulkner put it, “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore” (“Quotes About Courage”). Courage is being brave and determined to undertake an aspiration that is difficult or dangerous. It is taking off the training wheels all the while knowing you will fail on the first try, but getting up and trying again. Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee described courage as, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what” (Jackson). Courage is when you keep on trekking, no matter what. Even if the odds are stacked against you, or every attempt you have made in the past did not work out. Courage is not apologizing for standing up for something you believe in. It is doing what others see as impossible and unimaginable. Erica Jong states “Everyone has talent. What’s rare is the courage to follow it to the dark places where it leads” (“Quotes About Courage”). Any professional athlete or olympian decided they wanted to strive for greatness, put in hours upon hours of work, and never gave up. Courage is a person who has a goal to get an academic scholarship so they can afford to go to college. They challenge themselves and spend hours studying to achieve their dream and desire. Courage creates opportunities and experiences that will not be available if you chose to let fear
