Courage is not cowardice. Weakness is not courage. It is not hiding in the shadows, or giving into fear. Timidity is not associated with it. Courage is not David running away from Goliath, or Malala Yousafzai not standing up for her beliefs on girls’ education. It is how the real stories go. Enduring and unwavering amidst terror, despair, pain, or grief is courageous. As William Faulkner put it, “You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore” (“Quotes About Courage”). Courage is being brave and determined to undertake an aspiration that is difficult or dangerous. It is taking off the training wheels all the while knowing you will fail on the first try, but getting up and trying again.
