In the play, Romeo is in love with a girl named Rosaline, but she wanted to be a nun and had no interest in him. He kept trying and trying to please her, but one night Mercuitio and Benvoilio make him go to a party, where to his surprise, he found a new girl named Juliet. Their families were both enemies and they knew it, yet they both fell in love and eventually died because of eachother. The deaths of Romeo and Juliet were ultimately caused by Romeo and Juliet themselves.
Additionally, Romeo is completely refusing the ongoing obstacles his life is throwing at him without prearranged, first his banishment, now Juliet’s “death”. This line is severely significant to the actions of the play, because just two acts later, Romeo accepts his fate and ends his own life. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a story that is still profound and relevant today, some four hundred years after it was originally published. Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film version of the play is a postmodern interpretation and he has successfully “made [the story] available to a whole new audience” (Hutcheon. 2) through his use of interesting film techniques that are able to tell the story in an innovative way. In the film, Luhrmann does away with the famous balcony but rather has Romeo and Juliet meet next to the swimming pool in the Capulet mansion. Using clues provided by this book, it is clear that whether women were housewives, royalty, nurses, or children, they didn’t have equal rights to men. Men were very masculine; they ordered their wives around and expected women to obey. Whereas women were very obedient and unfortunately were often taken advantage of.
