In both The Summer Prince and The Odyssey the protagonists are able to save themselves and help members of their society through their special power or unconventionality. During The Odyssey, Odysseus’s special power is his strategy, while in The Summer Prince, June’s unconventionality is her art. Both texts show the main character’s ability to use their unique powers as a way to aid themselves. Odysseus saves himself through his smart tactics and June fixes herself through her artwork about society. While using her power to help her own self, June also utilizes her art to help others. Odysseus often abandons his crew men and takes advantage of his own strategy only for himself. At many points, Odysseus gets the opportunity to aid the innocent men on board with his acts but even then he acts selfishly. When he is warned not to eat the cow of Apollo, he fails to communicate this with the rest of the crew. Odysseus strategically saves himself by controlling against the temptation but lets the rest of his men die a painful death. If he had used his special ability to benefit everybody, he would have shared the consequences of eating the cows with his men and saved their lives. In contrast, June’s unconventionality aids not only her, but the whole society. She helps bring clarity and a better understanding of the world through her power. June expresses her good leadership skills and ability to be selfless. Though her artwork is not noticed at first, as time passes it begins to help the societal members to see another perspective. Her unconventionality opens the eyes if everybody so they can see the flaws in their world. June is able to assist many people because of the way she honestly portrays the downfall of her city.
