Character analysis The story, “Just Lather That’s All,” was written by Hernando Téllez and translated by Donald A. Yates. This was a first-person narrative that was told by the barber but the main antagonist of the story was a man named Captain Torres. Torres was a brave, imaginative and violent person. First of all, the story happened in a barbershop in a small Colombian town. One day, a customer came in for a shave. However, this was no typical customer, the barber’s detailed description of the antagonist, Captain Torres hanging up his military cap, and bullet belt, which make him look like a violent person. It was described that the captain has just returned from capturing a band of revolutionaries and takes pride in his success on a difficult mission. He needed a shave to make himself look different or maybe younger so that others won’t recognize him. Also, the barber described the captain as a man of imagination or creativity because “who else would have thought of hanging the naked rebels and then holding the naked rebels and then holding target practice on certain parts of their body.” Despite the danger, the barber kept his identity hidden while performing a fairly public duty. He, on the other hand despised Captain Torres. His brutality was confirmed when he reminded the barber of the previous week’s event when he summoned the town to view target practice on the bodies of hanged rebels. The barber had the chance to kill him with the razor when he was shaving near Torres’ Adam’s apple. The barber thought about slitting his throat with the razor but stopped himself when the following thoughts came to his mind. For example, he stated “a blade like this doesn’t fail. It is my best. But I don’t want to be a murderer, no sir. You came to me for a shave. And I perform my work honorably… I don’t
