Racism and prejudice have been a black stain on the history of our country since its creation. However, since the emancipation of the slaves in the U.S., measures have been taken to get rid of the racism that remains. The movie Just Mercy is an excellent example of how racism in the 1980s persisted in the legal system in the Deep South. When watching Just Mercy many elements could be evaluated, these are the ones that will be reviewed today—the story's impact, the effectiveness of the message, the authenticity of the story, and how it addresses the wider political/social issues outside of the film. The movie explores the themes of racism and prejudice in the legal system and in the South as a whole. Because the movie is based on true events, the criteria stated before will be used in light of that fact. The film will be evaluated to see how it stays true to the story and how well it affects the lives of those who watch it. Among the 4 criteria stated before impact is the one that will be discussed first. When considering the impact of the story, it is important to think about the takeaways of the story and whether or not it lives past the screen. Meaning: Does the story affect someone's life outside of watching the movie? For me, the key takeaway was that we need to be careful of how we act and think. The people at Just Mercy liked to claim that they had gotten rid of prejudice and racism. But they didn’t, it was still a big problem. The story made me think about my actions and thoughts. How many people do I judge or treat badly just because I have little prejudice against them? There were many times that I was highly disgusted by what happened in the story. It brought a lot of emotion into the story and it got you to think about the situation they were talking about in the story. This story specifically did a good job of showing the horror of racism while also providing the story of hope and change. Many of the reviews that people have posted about Just Mercy on IMDb talk about how the story and movie are moving and powerful. Almost every reviewer who gave the movie a 7/10 or more had something to say about how the message was powerful and made them want to prevent similar situations from happening.
