Both Holden Caulfield of “Catcher inthe Rye” and Jim Stark from “Rebel Without a Cause” are young, male characters growing up in the 1950’s. Holden is a very independent individual, he doesn’t really care about anything. Holden is a tough character he like to speak his mind, he also does things without worrying about the consequences. Jim is a very interesting character; he is a conformist person because he was always trying to fit in, I would also consider Jim a brave character because of the fact that he would do anything dangerous stunts just to make some friends. These two characters have important similarities and differences.
O’Connor voted against discrimination and followed the Constitution very closely. She was recognized as one who gave more opportunities to women. One source puts it well: “Although her decisions have not always been popular with women's rights activists, O'Connor still is considered to be a role model for women” (“O’Connor, Sandra Day”). As a result of all her work, O’Connor is remembered and loved by many as the first woman on Supreme Court. Without the work of Sandra Day O’Connor, it is probable that women would not have the same opportunities on Supreme Court as they do
Susan B. Anthony was born into a Quaker family, with the hope that everyone would one day be treated equal. She denied a chance to speak at a temperance convention because she was a woman(Susan B. Anthony). From this point on, she knew that she needed to make a change. Susan B. Anthony, because of her intense work involving women 's’ rights, highly influenced all of the societies and beliefs that were yet to come. She employed a huge role in our history because of the fact that she advocated for women’s rights, for the integration of women in the workforce, and for the abolition of slavery.
Analysis of Holden Caulfield In United States millions are diagnosed with a mental disorder ranging from minor to damaging effects on the human mind. During my meeting with Holden Caulfield his father has provided me information on his son. In addition, from my first meeting with Holden he sounded like a man who was unstable, like he said “When you’re feeling very depressed, you can’t even think” (Caulfield, 49). These direct words from Mr. Caulfield presents me with a feeling that Holden is feeling detachment from his life and feeling worthlessness.
There are always those well respected characters that mostly everyone is fond of in each book. In Harper Lee's fictional novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" it tells the story of a young girl named Jean Louise Finch, who goes by Scout. She experiences good vs evil, injustice, and racism all while growing up. She learns that these things happen all the time, all while learning life lessons from her father. Her father happens to be the character that mostly everyone is fond of.
In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield, is a troubled teenage boy. In both the novel and the article, Holden’s behavior reflects off of Salinger’s behavior and actions as well, which is what makes them so similar. In the article, the author expresses Salinger’s dislike for school and how he also drops out and is shipped off to military school. Once involved with war, Salinger develops PTSD, which is post-traumatic stress disorder and Holden begins to dislike the war, which helps readers understand the relationship between the two. In the article, the author compares both Salinger’s and Holden’s school days.
There have been many powerful leaders in this country, some fictional like Martin Luther King Jr and some non fictional like Atticus Finch. Martin Luther King Jr is famous for his “I Have A Dream” speech and Atticus Finch is in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Both men share similar traits like, they both have encountered hate from there society. Martin Luther King Jr and Atticus Finch make many people change their views on racism by giving strong speeches.
C. Holden Caulfield as an Archetypal Picaro The works of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung supplied the writers with “archetypal images” which were considered to be “universal images”. “The main ideas of Jung integrates on the collective unconscious that contains the `depot` of the archetypes or stereotypes which are perceived in a similar way nationally or sometimes even globally”( Berezhna 26). So when a literary work is analyzed through the archetypal images it is significant to comprehend that those are not personal opinions of the author but universal, archaic patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious. In literature, archetypes like the mother, the father, the trickster or in our case especially important, the
Describe how one person can make a big difference in history. How did Rosa Parks' refusal on the bus contribute to the fight for equality? Any person can make a big difference in history. But only if you're committed to making the World a better place.
Modern Day Holden In the novel The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield expresses certain negative characteristics and patterns that we often see today. Dylan Roof, Suspected mass shooter of a church in Charleston, South Carolina, shares many of these Holden like qualities. Holden never commits any serious crimes, but growing up the two have very similar childhood’s. In both cases Holden and Dylan drift in and out school, care about little to nothing, and neglect basic rules.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an advocate for civil rights, has often said while in the face of adversity, “Fight for the things you care about but do so in a way that will lead others to join you” (Alter). Ambitious as she is, her inaccurate depiction in the media contributes to her difficulty in pursuing this ideal. This misrepresentation attempts to both discredit and disregard her personality and accomplishments. Throughout her life, however, Ginsburg experienced far greater calamities than her perception in the media including significant events involving her upbringing. These hardships, while contributing to her anguish, led her to develop advances in character which later allowed her to pursue her beliefs and encourage
The society always limits people’s abilities. Holden in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Othello in Othello by William Shakespeare, and Plato in Rebel without a Cause by Nicholas Ray are all outsiders and marginalized figures. Holden is a teenage boy who has lost his direction in life due to the loss of his brother. Othello is a courageous and powerful Venetian general who is a Moor. Plato is a small yet aggressive high schooler who is a homosexual.
Although Holden is a very intelligent character he finds the hypocrisy and ugliness in the world around him and quickly associates it with the adult world. Holden is a very introverted character who hesitates throughout the book to share information about his life . J.D Salinger makes sure to portray Holden that way to
Three examples of such traits are that I like to speak my mind, I get anxious when things change and I am kind-hearted. Holden stood out to me because like myself, he likes to speak his mind. It is clear in the story that Holden is the type of character that says what he think. For example, when Holden says, “Lawyers are alright, I guess — but it doesn't appeal to me", I said.
Holden Caulfield’s story traces psychological/moral development and maturation. The conflicts that Holden deals with, shape him into a new adult. Holden learns so much on his journey, and finally accepts what society has to offer him. Society accepts him back, and Holden is rebirthed into an adult with new knowledge to benefit society. First off, Holden is portrayed as this terrible delinquent.
