The third suggestion would be fixing the Juvenile court system. There had been many unfair cases among youth offenders for over the last 50 years. Cases where youth offenders end up being charged as an adult, being charged for the crimes they have done and their sentencing. According to the Model for change article on Juvenile indigent defense, “Young people in trouble with the law have a right to legal counsel, but they frequently don’t get the timely or adequate representation they need” (“Reform Areas”). Other than the unfair charges for youth, when it comes for youth having the right to counsel and accept plea offers, they will not fully understand their actions. From watching the video of “This is Their Normal” almost all the plans that the boys have thought is getting a job after they leave the system. I noticed that most of the boys did not mention about going to school or at least getting a GED. They have the notion that once they leave the system they will find a job within an instant but what they do not realize is that they have a record that is holding them back. From there the ex-juvenile offenders could face challenges. Another case after leaving the system is Megan from the girls in prison film. After she was released from the system, she transferred into a foster home but while she was in the foster home, she would leave without asking permission, hanging out with the wrong crowd, and doing drugs. Also how her probation officer would not check up on her at certain times to see if she was making progress. To illustrate the issue, the section on Aftercare from the Models for Change, explains “the estimated 100,000 young people leaving juvenile institutions each year face failure, recidivism, and more incarceration” (“Reform Areas”). What’s unfortunate about this issue is that there is a short supply of aftercare in the United States (“Reform Areas”). This is a definite suggestion I would change in the Juvenile system, if I had the power to do so. I would create an aftercare service to help youth adjust to their
