Your comment on the maximum sentence a juvenile homicide offender can receive is incarceration until he/she is 21 years of age has kept me studying. I continue to wonder why to release someone after say a few years for such violent acts; concerning, to say the least. I have also been researching the “juvenile life” sentence trying to get a better understanding of how these two issues are handled.
First, I wanted to say thank you for the through provoking discuss post again. You have me on my toes this week. I’m still trying to grasp the entire process of the release at 21, but I think I have figured out some more on this point.
From what I see my state hasn’t adopted the entire process of juvenile life with or without parole whereas other states have (“A State-By-State Look At Juvenile Life Without Parole”, 2017). In making the decision, who will be freed by 21, 35, or which will remain behind bars, I will assume a lot has to be taken into consideration. Such as the manner a crime was committed, the type of crime, and then rehabilitation success or lack thereof.
