America and many other countries enjoy the sport of football. Fans worldwide watch and follow NFL games and all the problems that occur during games, by players, coaches, team, even fans. All fans want to see the players, coaches, and teams, be punished fairly for something they do on or off the field. But, it was noticed that the certain punishments being dealt, were extremely unfairs and are unjustified. As time went on it was noticed even more that, these unfair and unjustified punishments began to become too much for the players, coaches, team, and fans to have to see and hear about.
As George Orwell once said, “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” Every day, men and women in the armed forces fight for our freedom and for our safety. As we live our day to day lives, we do not think about how our country became free and who made it free. In America, we have the freedom of petition, freedom of religion, but most importantly in Colin Kaepernick’s case, the freedom of speech. Recently, Colin Kaepernick, 49er’s quarterback, refused to stand for the National Anthem.
Or teams, like the Indianapolis Colts, have released statements claiming that when they are kneeling, they have no intention of disrespecting the military, they only want to “speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.” The teams and players that are kneeling and what they are protesting is an example of conflict theory. The players claim that there is racial injustice in America and this is an example of social inequality, which the conflict theory puts emphasis on. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the chief proponents for racial equality, has just been assassinated. Robert Kennedy breaks this news to the crowd while championing the Martin Luther King Jr.’s cause. Kennedy wants to focus the crowds energy into “an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence.”’ He wants to encourage people to unite in the United States and close racial divisions. The last example is Coach Boone’s speech at Gettysburg from the movie, Remember the Titans.
Incidents concerning racism are now receiving a lot of media attention. Twenty-five years ago, a group of police officers beating on a black person would not have gotten as much media attention as the Rodney King incident. Rodney King was an African-American who was pulled over and beaten by four Los Angeles police officers for reckless driving while under the influence of an illegal substance. That unfortunate event was pivotal in the sense that the whole world gained consciousness on what was really going on as far as racial tension was concerned. There have been many other publicized incidents in the news after the Rodney King incident.
He states that African Americans did not experience the same rights of citizenship as other Americans. King also explains why African Americans had to protest. He said that the only way to spur change was to bring attention to it. Protesting does this and only then, will people see that change is needed.

As a result Colin career is jeopardy, now some say he is no longer a good quarterback and that is why he is currently unemployed. But there are lesser skilled QBs and QBs will less accomplishments still employed in the NFL. One thing will never know is if Colin did not protest would he still be unemployed at this point of free agency. A little later on, after having moved a couple of times to escape the discrimination, his father was killed, but the police had ruled it a streetcar accident. Next, because his mother had never recovered from the shock, so she was thrown into a mental institute, and the siblings were divided up into foster care. He went to school and ended up being one of the smartest people in his junior class, but when his teacher said he would not become a lawyer he dropped out.

Colin Kaepernick is a current professional football player who is using his status as a professional athlete to promote activism for the cause of the mistreatment of minorities. Kaepernick, who while playing in the NFL, made the decision to kneel during the national anthem “[he was] not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” (Greenwood). This shows how he is trying to make a change to how minorities are viewed and treated in today’s society even after all of the so called progress on civil rights. His actions caused other athletes and teams to follow suit, and he garnered support from them, and together, these athletes and teams showed solidarity for their cause. Racism in team names such as the Cleveland Indians and the Washington Redskins causes a lot of controversy because of the meaning of the name because it obscures the reality of Native Americans experiences, traditions, and place in U.S. history. Some people think that this isn’t really a problem but others want the teams to change their names because of how much they are bothered by it. I do not think teams should have to change their names because if the NFL or NBA doesn’t see a problem with the names then there probably isn’t a problem with it. People are probably over reacting over this thing. Racism in sports occurs because the teams don't think that the team name is a problem so they just use the name.
Colin Kaepernick who stayed seated during the play of “The Star Spangled Banner,” because he didn’t want to stand up and show pride for a country that oppresses black and colored people. Which caused a lot of political and ethical controversy if he was wrong or right. Did he enter in the right time? What I believe is that Kaepernick did the right thing at the right time because he had the right intension as to why he refused to stand up during the national anthem.
Racism is a part of American history that can never be forgotten; a dark past that shows the constant mistreatment of African-Americans. Although African-Americans were freed from slavery in the 1860’s, discrimination continues to be seen today. Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. The white supremacy woven into mainstream American culture led to the continued widespread exclusion of African-Americans.
