Kantian Ethics is one of three categories in the ethical world. Kantian Ethics deals with the intentions behind an action, not the consequences. The intentions should be “right”. For the intentions to be right, one must act from one’s duties and out of respect for the moral law. Based on the intent of the action performed, the action is then judged accordingly. The Universal Law Formula of Kantian Ethics says that to act on that principle alone, once can at the same time will to be a universal law. Kantian Ethics is solely based on one’s intentions which makes it an interesting view of ethics because many views take into account the consequences of the situation as well. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, a powerful story can lead to viewers romanticizing the choices made, causing them to make the same choices. This was also a big concern for parents. This is not the first-time parents have been worried about their children following what they see on television. Many reality television shows and game shows have warnings at the start of them telling viewers to not attempt anything they see in the show. In a poll done after the shows release, it was shown that while increasing suicide awareness (the producers’ intentions), they consequently also increased suicidal ideation. Netflix was also arrogant when not putting trigger warnings on 10 or the 13 episodes. Yes, one can be thankful that they included warnings on the three most graphic episodes, but why not all episodes? One can see how this lack of understanding about how just the discussion of Hannah’s life events could potentially effect someone watching is a major clue to their arrogance. Understanding Kantian Ethics is very important here because their intentions were to increase suicidal awareness, which they did, so one cannot combat that with the effects of the release because that goes against the ethical theory.
