I. FALSIFICATIONISM The Falsifiability theory is one of the demarcation criterion being used by Karl Popper, in order to separate science and pseudoscience. The statement or theory can be categorized or ranked as scientific, when there is possibility of not being true. It does not mean that the theory should actually be falsified, as long as we can analyze or test the theory in certain conditions which they would be falsified, then that should be fine. When the statement or theory is not falsifiable, then the statements cannot be categorized as scientific. There are four main characteristics of falsificationism: (1) Falsifiability is an adequate criterion of demarcation; (2) Only theories that can be falsified are informative; (3) Falsificationism …show more content…

men are disposed, as a rule and on the average, to increase their consumption as their income increases, but not as much as the increase in their income”. Keynes (1963) believed that this theory is proven to be valid as if we assume that in a short period of time, for a man habitual standards of life, they usually have the apt to save the difference between his actual income and his expenses. This could also means that as a person earns an extra income, he typically spend some of it and saves some of it. The rising number of income will thus often be accompanied by the increased in saving, while falling in income will often leads to decreased the saving. III. FALSIFIABILITY ANALYSIS IN KEYNES’ THEORY OF CONSUMPTION By using Popper’s theory of falsification, this essay will examine whether Keynes’ Theory of Consumption is falsifiable, thus can be furthered check whether the theory can be classified as science or pseudoscience. Using the first characteristics of Popper’s falsifiability theory, falsifiability is an adequate criterion of demarcation, it can be proven that this statement is falsifiable under several specific conditions. In Miller (1996), Milton Friedman believed that there are some weaknesses in Keynes’ Theory of Consumption. He argued that it is impossible for the individuals to continually spend their income …show more content…

This is then satisfy to the second characteristics of falsificationism: only theories that can be falsified are informative. Keynes’ Theory of Consumption also satisfy to the third and fourth characteristics of falsificationism. It can be proven from the fact that there are some weaknesses in Keynes’ theory as with the founding by Milton Friedman. Human can make mistakes, they are said to be fallible creature. They learn from their mistakes, doing trial and error research; that is how our knowledge can grow from time to time (Dooremalen, De Regt, & Schouten, 2007). IV. CONCLUSIONS To sum up, in order to examine whether the theory can be classified as science or pseudoscience, can be further checked by using Popper’s Theory of Falsification. Keynes’ Theory of Consumption is proven to be scientific since it is corresponds to the four of main characteristics of Popper’s falsifiability theory. As of Keynes’ Theory of Consumption is part of IBA study, thus we can conclude that IBA study can be categorized as scientific since it can be proven to be falsified by using Popper’s Theory of
