What makes one person want to harm another? One reason a person may want to harm another is to get revenge. In the book The Year We Disappeared by Cylin and John Busby, John wants desperately to get revenge on the person who shot him in the face while he was out on a night patrol. John finds himself desiring to inflict harm on John Meyer, the person he assumes shot him, yet he does not know if this is the right thing and considers forgiveness as an option. I believe this theme exists in both of the works because both have characters who seek revenge and in the process hurt the innocent. For example in the conflict of Romeo and Juliet revenge is shown by Romeo and leads to discomfort for himself.
When someone wrongs another person, the person wronged has three choices. They can either seek revenge, ignore the incident, or forgive. For some people seeking revenge can act as a form of justice, as one may feel the person who wronged them deserves some form of punishment for their actions. For others, the incident might not be worth the effort of seeking revenge or trying to forgive; instead, they choose to just forget or ignore they were wronged. The final option is to choose to forgive and release the feelings of hate and hurt one has against the person who wronged them.

Expressed through the eyes of 7-year-old, you learn about her father Atticus Finch, an attorney who desperately tries to prove the innocence of a black man falsely accused of rape; and about Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor who saves Scout and Jem from being slaughtered by Bob Ewell. In the scene when Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell, Lee develops the theme, revenge brings consequences through external conflict, and symbolism. Seeking destructive revenge always creates a larger issue.

Both The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Moby Dick by Hermann Melville include a male character “who is completely consumed by a revenge scheme (Althubaiti)”. Captain Ahab from Moby Dick and Roger Chillingworth from The Scarlet Letter both feel they have justification for the actions they take while seeking revenge. Ahab has lost his leg while hunting the white whale known as Moby Dick while Chillingworth arrives home after a 2 year captivity with natives to find his wife has had a baby outside of their marriage. Chillingworth does not feel as though Hester, his wife, has had a hersh enough punishment “which led him to imagine a more intimate revenge” for her aside from jail time and public humiliation (Hawthorne 11.1).
Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.

The superhero or villain that I would like to change places for a day would be Natasha Romanoff, better known as the Black Widow who is apart of The Avengers. Even though she doesn’t have a robotic suit, a hammer, or a shield like some of the other Avengers, she can still take down an entire army with her impressive combat skills. In addition to her amazing fighting talent, Natasha does not age. She was born during WWII, but because her body has been scientifically engineered she is not affected by diseases and aging. Although it would only be a day in which I would not age, it would still be amazing to be one day younger.
