The Story of an Hour Kate Chopin, The Story of an Hour was written in 1894. Kate Chopin, originally name Kathrine O’ Flaherty, was born in 1851. She was born to a wealthy merchant and an aristocratic mother. At nineteen she married her husband, Oscar Chopin and moved to New Orleans and then Louisiana. Chopin is known for her short stories Bayou Folks and A Night in Arcadie. Theses stories depict our ideas of Chopin as a writer today. Her writings are known for creating a detailed picture of people and regions. Her stories are often sexual and authentic. Her direct voice helped evolve new writers. Though, her detailed and authentic voice budded new writers, her voice in The Awakening caused a bit of controversy. This novel was soon removed from the public library in Chopin’s hometown. The Story of an Hour takes place in Mrs. Mallard’s home in the 1890’s. Mrs. Mallard is the protagonist in this story. This is because in her lifetime I believe she had faced abuse or was extremely controlled by her husband. Mrs. Mallard is a reflection of Kate Chopin’s life and feelings. Mrs. Mallard was outspoken and held extreme strength, similarly to Chopin. Since marriage at nineteen years old, I presume Chopin was done being control and/or abused.

Another symbol I noticed was in the line, “she could see in the open square before her house the tops of the trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life” (pg 115). I believe this sentence foreshadowed her desire for a new life/ happiness. There was just as many themes in The Story of an Hour as there were
