Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, which is the background for her first novel, The Help. The novel was based off of her childhood experiences growing up in the 1970s, a time where segregation was present. Because she grew up in a white household in the 70s, she was essentially raised by the family’s African American maid, Demetrie, whom she adored.
