Katniss 'Defiance In The Hunger Games' By Suzanne Collins

In the novel Hunger Games, a book by Suzanne Collins we are introduced to our main character, Katniss. When we see her at the beginning of the book till the end there is always one thing that she constantly is with, the mockingjay, the symbol of defiance. This essay will discuss her relationship with the mockingjay and how it will bloom her character further.
Katniss is living in a society that thrives on fear. To maintain that fear the Capitol punishes anyone for any act that could be perceived as defiance. Only Katniss never seemed to care about defying the Capitol if it meant she could provide for her family. She hunted and traded her illegal excess goods in the Hob. The black market for District 12. When she was younger she vocally defied the Capitol. She sang against the government and how they treated her district, her family and everyone else, then she stopped. The Capitol would’ve wanted to kill that voice of defiance. Katniss says in Chapter 2, “So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no-one could ever read my thoughts.” Her indifference towards the Capitol and the Games are thrown out the window when her sister is called as a Tribute. Volunteering herself in her sister's place she begins her journey as a Tribute. Upon reaching the Capitol her indifference tended to slip at different times, especially when she was in the arena. When she saw Rue, watched Rue die, making Rue’s grave and she herself nearly dying. All of these events have a common factor, Katniss defying a rule that has been set. Every action she took affected the Capitol in some sort of way. Like the jabberjay. An experiment that was conducted by the capitol and went wrong. The Capitol never bothered to take on this “failed project” head on and let it go into the wild expecting it to not survive. Though its offspring did, the mockingjay.
