In Kay S. Hymowitz’s essay “Where Have the Good Men Gone?” published in the Wall Street Journal she claims that the phase in a man’s life known as pre-adulthood does not bring out what is best in men. Pre- adulthood is when men in their twenties live in a state in-between adulthood and adolescents. “today’s pre-adults are…a major demographic event.” Hymowitz discuss the way a man’s place in society are drastically changed since they have begun to enter this pre-adulthood. Men remaining in this state of pre-adulthood has led to women becoming more successful and more powerful than men, they are achieving major life events such as graduating from college in much larger numbers than their male counterparts.

Contemporary lifestyles have caused people who do get married to do so much later in life. So people don’t feel that they must get married in order to be successful in their lives. Another problem we have is that we as a culture are not aware what the social role is for men and that is often what we use to “explain this puerile shallowness.” Women becoming more independent has led to men who once had to prove themselves as providers and caretakers to be unnecessary in many instances. This has led them to struggle with how to be appealing to the women who now feel that having a man in their lives is an optional decision.
Hymowitz’s concludes the article with the belief that women are somewhat responsible for the lack of good men because they often just put up with the guys for a little while and then they give up on the idea of having a family or they go to a sperm bank and do it themselves. Women also struggle with similar issues, but it has not caused them to give up and turn to this pre-adulthood phase. They have taken these struggles in stride and gone on to get degrees and find jobs where they are successful and happy, and it appears they have been doing it at higher rates than men. Despite the struggle of the whole generation to find jobs and be successful women are not struggling as much as men to move forward and move into
