Gavin Sandor, Mr. Guerrette, AP Lang 3/11/24 Investigative Journalism About the Osage Murders. Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann, follows the investigation of a series of murders in the Osage Nation reservation in Oklahoma during the 1920s. The Osage had gathered immense wealth from hidden oil reserves under their land. Many non-Osage wanted to leech off this wealth and take it for themselves. A plot to systematically eliminate prominent members of the Osage Tribe was uncovered, with William Hale at its center. The young FBI led the investigation, and it brought the killers to justice. In the video “What Is Investigative Journalism,” executive director of the Global Investigative Journalism Network David Kaplan explains the first aspect of investigative journalism. When describing systematic in depth original research, he states, “You are taking your time and going through something in a systematic way to really understand.” David Grann does this exceptionally and identifies that within his writing. For example, when talking about his sources he states, “They include thousands of pages of FBI files, secret grand jury testimony, court transcripts, informants’ statements, logs from private eyes, pardon and parole records, and private correspondence” (323). Grann easily could've done a quick Wikipedia search about the Osage murders, and based his entire story on what the page stated, however, that doesn't meet the criteria for investigative journalism. Grann looks at countless files, transcripts, and logs to find every little detail he can. He goes through all this information to provide the most accurate, relevant, and truthful explanation of the Osage
