After watching the film killing us softly: Advertising image of Women, I have learned several things about women’s image in our society. In the film, it was shown how advertising is a powerful force of socialization. The ads shown in TV’s sell cultural norms. In the movie, it was shown how women in our society are usually defined as a sex object. They can be part of the advertisement only if they look slim and sexy, whereas there are no restrictions for men. Women are always overly concerned with how they look. For example, In Indian culture, if you are age 25 and older and you are decent looking unmarried girl, everyone is society will start talking about you and you not getting married. This is related to what we learn in class about Gender stratification. Gender stratification is unequal access to power, property and prestige for Men and Women. Your gender is your master status in society and it cuts across all aspects of life. Women are always ranked inferior to Men whether it is in sports, politics, and business. When we are talking about sports, there is always more media coverage about Men’s sports such as football or baseball.
