Underestimating the Mighty
Individuals around the world have been placing stereotypes on people since the beginning of time. It could be as small a stereotype as blondes being dumb to be as big of a stereotype as Jews being spawns of the devil. We all do this even if it is only a joke. In Africa, they have been stereotyped for as long as people have been alive. For example, many people say Africa only has poor people, but if you look at the past, you will be proved wrong. Mansa Musa, king of Mali, is one of the richest people to ever live. People believe that advanced African civilizations began with the colonization of the Europeans in the 15th and 16th centuries, however, Egypt, Mali, and Songhai are examples to the contrary.

Mansa Musa also brought Islam to Mali. He made Islam spread much more than it would have if he did not adopt the religion. Moreover, he based his justice system on the Muslim holy book; the Koran. Because he was a devout Muslim, he took his pilgrimage to Mecca during his rule. This gained him a great deal of respect and he gained many more West African and Middle East contacts. This made Mali more powerful than ever. Once Mansa Musa died, Mali had its decline because his successors could not rule Mali correctly and cities started to break away. The capital city of Songhai is Gao and the first leader was Sunni Ali in 1464. Ali restored the order in Songhai. Because Mali was so weak at this time, Ali kept sending armies across Western Africa leading to the capture of Timbuktu. During Ali's rule all he did was go to war, but it created a very nice structure for the next leader, Askia Muhammed. Muhammed also was Muslim and on his pilgrimage, he convinced Islamic teachers and writers to go and live in Timbuktu. When they did, Timbuktu became a main site for learning. During the reign of Muhammed, he, "Helped Songhai to reach its peak of power" (Ahmad 82), but Songhai the started to fall due to invaders from Morocco.
