I believe that Richard is a manipulative, tragic hero figure. Shakespeare shows that King Richard is a powerful character who commands the respect of a true king, but Richard is blind and foolish, yet he inspires fear and pity to his audience. He believed he was endowed with divine powers and could take property that belonged to others, but he had no right (Erable, 2003). He failed as a king, so inevitably his country suffered. His flaws lead to his downfall at the hand of Bolingbroke. Richard loses in the end. He loses his crown and is killed because he is weak and corrupt, and because he neglected his duties as king, was swayed by flatterers and because he lost sight of …show more content…

Women were not thought of as beneficial to their plot. Shakespeare, however, found use for women in his works and used them to make the plot of the play more interesting. In Richard II, he showed that women enriched the literary and theatrical aspects of his work. In Richard II, the women seem to be geared more toward family because family is important in the role of politics. Although the women in the play may be only minor characters, they play an important role in the development and plot of the play. They give emotion, love, they are maternal and safe. Simple scenes such as when the gardener pities the tearful Queen and compares her with Ruth. This is an important scene because both are widows who share the same emotions, and have to leave home after their husbands die (GREGG, 2008, Fall2008). This means that this play is more on the side of the men. Most of the women in the play were being use to either care for the men and speak for the men when they were not able too. The women were more like a voice for the men. In these times women did not have voice. Shakespeare used the women in his play for many different rolls. He knew back then that women were loving and kind. This has always been a nice sitting for the play and whatever area his play was being played. This why his plays are so interesting.
