In the opening chapters of the book “Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, the author does a spectacular job of using different techniques such as point of view, selection of detail, and figurative language to characterize the complex relationship between Amir and Baba. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” is a known expression for many father and son relationships although that isn’t the case in this book the father is a very important role model for a son however Baba is not there for Amir because Baba doesn’t understand why Amir isn’t exactly like him.

In chapters 1-5 of the book “Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, the author shows us the complex relationship between father and son (Amir and Baba) with point of view. “Baba’s snoring so much like a growling truck engine,” It is using a simile to compare Baba’s snoring to a truck engine, for Baba to snore like that shows the strength and power Baba has showing the readers just why Amir is so frightened by his father. Next a hyperbole is shown “But he’s always buried in those books,” Amir has a great love for books and writing as the readers learn Baba is disappointed because Amir and his dad have nothing in common Baba wants Amir to be manly and strong willed. Finally onomatopoeia is shown when “The earth shook a little and we heard the rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire,” This signifies the Russians coming into Afghanistan and overthrowing the government. This is the beginning of the end for Baba and Amir to stay in Kabul and continue the wealthy
