a) The impact of the media on Kitty Genovese affected the criminal justice system in the following ways: the criminal system was seen as faulty system because they need to get tough crime. William Mosely who was charged with the death of Kitty Genovese was sentenced to the death, but he his sentence was later reduced to twenty years. While in prison Mosely escaped, raped and held people hostage. He was later recaptured. Many would argue that if he the justice system was being tough on crime then he would have been put to death and would not be able to commit more crimes. As a result of the Kitty’s death the criminal justice system was implemented the Good Samaritan Law, the 911 call system and the neighborhood watch program. The nature in which the media reported in on Kitty’s death brought many to question the apathetic nature of the American society. For example the media reported that there were 38 witnesses who watched as Kitty was being killed and did not helped. The most common type of victim portrayed in media is often times women who are helpless. Because of this fear of crime many of the witnesses themselves wanted to feel safe. For example the neighbor who said” let the girl alone,” did it in the confines of his home without further investigation. The reason why Kitty case received so much media attention was because based off some media people were of the view that the city was heartless and as a result was afraid to act. No one wants to be victims of any form of crime and many felt that by intervening they themselves would become victims. The media tends to portray individuals of minority group as criminal predators.
