Koko The Gorilla Analysis

The story of Koko the gorilla is a special one. It has definitely raised a few questions about evolution and how Gorillas and monkeys and humans share similar characteristics. Many people who do not believe in evolution and Darwinism may find this video very interesting.
In the video, Koko shows how she interacts with human guardians and her species of monkeys. She learns sign language and is able to communicate with humans. Sign language help her to express her feelings about her self and someone else. She is able to have a conversations just as human typically would on a day to day basis. Some cognitive skills that I observed through out the video was attention, she acknowledged and interacted with her human friends whenever they were in the room. She also showed perception, which allowed her to hear, touch and smell food and understand. Koko invented new signs and emotions that primate just like her would not be able to do. Koko the Gorilla was able to learn sign language because in general, gorillas share similar to humans. Secondly, she was able to communicate because gorilla’s use their own form of sign language to communicate in the wild. In the video, Koko was not successful with mating with Michael because she considered him to be her brother. Similarly to humans, Gorillas have no mating interest in siblings, kins or a gorilla that they grew up with. Even though Koko found a new boyfriend, she was unsuccessful again. In the gorilla world when it comes to mating there has to a equal amount of each gender present, or more males and vice versa.
