The narrator uses “various stages of anarchy” as a metaphor for the little children’s diapers. Anarchy, in its basic form means a society without rulers. One of the key concepts of anarchy is the existence of a non-hierarchical system. This concept also applies to the way Kool-Aid Wino’s family lives. It seems that there are no clear distinctions between the members’ roles within the household. Everybody has to do whatever he or she can to help out the family. But in Kool-Aid Wino’s case he simply ignores those situations when somebody’s in need of help to carry on doing what makes him happy. He was an anti-war activist and supported anti-imperialism as well as nuclear disarmament. It’s clear that he fought for freedom and peace in the world by revolting against dictatorial regimes. As he was one of the prominent philosophers of his time he must have been good at using the language to pass on his ideas. In the story, the boy finds peace in the process of making a Kool-Aid. He simply brushes his mother off by saying he’ll soon do the dishes. In this case, the boy might see his mother as an enforcer figure standing on his way of being free. His attitude in a way alludes to Bertrand Russell’s ideas. Also in an ideal sense the boy should have done the dishes, cared for his siblings and also given the money to his family for support. But he doesn’t do any of those and instead he spends the money for something that makes him feel free and happy. Bertrand Russell turned against idealism, which regarded individuals as social beings.

The author uses a simile in this sentence. Fruit under a tree is used to describe the image of half-rotten books all over the chicken house. Fruit that grow on trees need to be picked up by someone; otherwise they fall on the ground after a while and start rotting away. This simply indicates the state of the books that are thrown all over the place, not taken care of.
