DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 1ST Statement of Intent: Please briefly state your reason for wishing to attend LMU and/or how you came to select your major. This in turn negatively impacts the daily lives of people around the globe. For example, the people of certain sub-Saharan African and South Asian countries depend heavily on the crops they cultivate to make a living off of. However, the extreme weather patterns foster instability to agriculture. The intense heat waves have the potential to devastate individuals’ crops, strain their livestock, and damage their property. A loss of productivity can be devastating to a poor nation and its citizens that rely on its natural resources for their livelihood. The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report Projections suggested regional changes in the global distribution of hunger due to climate change. In sub-Saharan Africa, the frequency of drought will cause crop yields to drop and therefore reduce the amount of food available to its residents. These countries already struggle with hunger and poverty; the added pressure of trying to sustain an economy reliant on agriculture becomes overbearing due to the impacts of global climate change. In some cases, the changes in climate force the poor, who are unable to adapt to the living conditions, to migrate. The term “climate refugee” has been coined to refer to those who are forced to leave their homes due to sudden changes in their environment such as drought, flooding, or other climate-related disasters
