Refugee’s lives are filled with struggles and terror. A refugee is a migrant that is outside their home country of citizenship because they are fearful of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, or membership of a certain social group. They leave their home country because they are not safe there. Then they arrive to a place like the U.S. and struggle to adapt to a new culture and life. I chose to go to this presentation because the topic of refugees has been significant lately. RISE in collaboration with EMBARC sponsored a presentation where Dr. Liberata Aung shared her experience as a refugee. Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center is a community organization that was founded to help ethnic members from Burma. They have three programs they focus on: advocacy, community development, and education. Dr. Liberata is a Burmese refugee herself who came to America to find a better life. Refugees need all the help they can get when resettling. They have no money, rarely and education, and they cannot speak English. Everything they need to have a good life needs to be taught to them. That’s why organizations such as EMBRAC are there to help them through that
