Before majoring in Health Sciences, I was previously a Nursing Major up until the third quarter. I discovered the importance of empathy and understanding as the patients were very frightened and by listening to them, I found I was able to put their mind at ease and give them a more positive medical experience. I was able to speak to both the surgeon and anaesthetist and learnt the immense commitment involved however being able to improve lives was rewarding. Neonatal nurses play an important role in health care providing devotion and love for newborns, whether infants are born with birth defects, premature, critically ill, or perfectly healthy. A few tasks neonatal nurses are required to do is to feed, change, watch the infants closely, and help provide support to the new families (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Many choices or experiences in life could lead someone to this career; such as, babysitting seeing a sick child who needs help, or even personal experiences. All types of nursing require some type of degree; the smallest would be a two year associate degree. Although people can stop there, some nursing careers prefer more education and experience.

Returning to college as an adult learner is a difficult decision at best. Consequently, it is somewhat like deciding to have a child. When is the right time, what is the right circumstance, can I afford the additional expenses and how will I bear the additional responsibility? Becoming complacent with a career as an Associate Degree Registered Nurse, focusing on family and life, instead of earning a Bachelor of Science Degree would be the easy option.
For instance, it was interesting to be able to see and work within the different dynamics of the nursing profession. In the OR and endoscopy unit I noticed that the nurses seemed much more relaxed than those on the medical or surgical floor. I felt as though they had copious amounts of time to educate on the different procedures and different pieces of the specialty areas, while allowing me plenty of time to ask questions to broaden my knowledge. In the endoscopy unit, the RN that I shadowed was very involved in my learning and made me feel as if I were a part of the team and not just a
My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.
I just hope that I am able to keep up and stay with this group of individuals because I am not sure I would be as successful if it weren’t for the bond we have developed these past nine weeks. I once heard some of the best friendships you will ever have will be made in nursing school and I can definitely see that already with a few. I am sure by graduation day we will all be crying tears of joy and sadness since we did it but will no longer be together. This quarter has been a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly good, and I look forward to what next quarter brings. Hopefully my brain can hold all this information, I feel like it grows 2 sizes every week!
In the world of college, there are many majors or professions to choose from. Whatever career I choose to take, I know that there are many doors open for me to walk through. Planning for life after high school, I am considering going into the medical field to become a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse (NICU). A NICU Nurse is a nurse who cares for premature and critically ill newborns that are born in need of immediate medical attention.
As a first generation student to attend college from a family of seven, the journey to a higher education has been arduous and overwhelming. My family gives me all the encouragement I need and are very optimistic about pursuing a higher degree. Unlike myself, my parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. My parents were born and raised in a small town in Mexico where the highest level of education they received was fifth grade. I have worked since I was 14 years old to support my parents with bills, and also saving for college and my own vehicle.
I was able to create better therapeutic communication skills, pick up on the patient’s ticks, learn how to assess for triggers, etc. I will use this in the future because I will come in contact with patients who suffer from a mental illness on any floor I work on. They may not as serious as some of the patients I worked with on this clinical rotation, however, it is still important, as a nurse, to recognize and address mental health issues with patients. I also learned just how important self-care for nurses is. It doesn’t take long for nurses to begin to feel burnt out and lose passion in what they do.
As I enter my final semester of nursing, I look forward to new nursing opportunities and to apply my nursing philosophy with each new experience. My goal as a nurse is to grow and learn each day, knowing that each day will provide me with new knowledge making me a better nurse than the day before, and becoming a better nurse the following day than the previous day. Nursing is an exciting, fulfilling, and respected profession which I am very fortunate to be a part of and look forward to the journey
Today, I am glad I choose nursing because I have overcome my social fears, learn to be a team player, learn how to prioritize and most importantly learned to manage stress. Lastly, I grew as a nurse with each semester because I learned how to respect and treat each patient as a unique individual. I have also learned to put my patient safety as my priority and provide presence because I realized through my clinical experience that, sometimes that all the patients need.
