The colonists didn’t have any experience with keeping things sanitary due to this lack of experience they contributed to the disease and death going around Jamestown. In document A it said, “ colonists dug shallow wells to supply themselves with sources of drinking water.” This shows that they were uneducated in keeping things sanitary and safe, because if they were educated in starting a new colony they would have known that digging a shallow well would only bring in salt water which is deadly when ingested abundantly. Another example of the colonists not keeping things sanitary due to their lack of experience is “ 110 colonists from famine and disease’’ (document E) This is proof that the colonists didn’t have any background experience when
In 27 BCE (Before Common Era) the Roman Empire was entering its golden age, “The Pax Romana.” During the Pax Romana, the citizens of all Roman cities enjoyed free food and entertainment along with access to all of the Roman amenities such as bathhouses, roads, and mail service. However in 180 CE (Common Era) the Roman empire took a turn for the worse and eventually the last empire fell in 476 CE. The once powerful Roman Empire was in shambles. So what happened to the empire?
People like the Huns were coming to Rome, and with them came diseases. The diseases were devastating, killing around 75% of Rome’s population (Doc F second source). The Huns were also feared by the Romans. Many thought of them as barbaric savages, who would slaughter them all, or pillage their homes (Doc D). These two factors combined led to the people losing even more support of the government, who were not protecting them.
With so many people were dying already from the disease grief was high. Medication at the time was no wear near what it is in present times. The health statue of Europe was falling and the large masses of people who were dying began to raise horror in people. To correspond with that many people had little to no knowledge of cleanliness and how it can affect heath.
People were not working. Everything was out of control; it was a free-for-all. Judges 21:25 accurately describes Rome at this time “All the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes” (NLT). There was not enough people holding political power and the empire was becoming unmanageable. There were rebellions and surprise attacks.
There were many different causes for the fall of the Roman empire, not just one. The Roman Empire was very strong, but eventually broke down over time for a multitude of reasons. Most of those reasons had to do with changes in Rome’s identity. Some of these changes in Rome’s identity led to the fall of Rome because they were so sudden; only portions of the Roman population were prepared for the change. Other times, citizens got into arguments because they were, in a way, too prepared.
Rome had a big impact because of medicine and science. They made many types of medicine. One to help a bad cough. One to ease pain. We have many medicines to help with headaches, scrapes, cuts, and many other pains.
Because so many people were forced to live in one common area, the buildings would be inflicted with unsanitary conditions. These included poor plumbing and a lack of running water. Larson referenced the fact that people in the community would dump waste into the city’s water supply, which contributed to the spread of sickness and disease and went untreated because of limited access to healthcare. The city’s insufficient sanitation systems led to diseases like Typhus and Cholera running rampant through the city, infecting many.
Dolores Huerta was born in the early 30’s to her compassionate mother, Alicia, who helped low-wage workers by accommodating them at her hotel for free. Alicia, a role model to her daughter, inspired Dolores to help others as well. Despite excelling in school and extracurricular activities, Dolores faced racism in her Californian school, and was once even accused of plagiarism by a teacher who believed Dolores was incapable because she was Hispanic. As stated by the writers of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, she began a career as a teacher which was soon cut short because she could not bear seeing children in terrible economic conditions on a daily basis. Angered, she began a life of activism. ("Dolores Huerta.")
The civilization of ancient Rome was one time the mightiest on the planet. Yet it, like any other civilization, began as one small settlement. The Roman Empire suffered numerous complications in its final years. The late Roman empire was frequently invaded by several barbarian groups, most notably the Huns and Vandals.
The number of people who died in natural disasters and from fighting without armor was a huge blow to the Roman Empire. Along with the natural disasters, there was disease that swept the empire, causing even more deaths and a massive decline in the amount of people fit to fight for Rome. “A series of plagues that swept the empire… which brought diseases [from] southern Asia to new areas like the Mediterranean, where no resistance had been established even to contagions such as measles. The resulting diseases decimated the population. The population of Rome decreased from a million people to 250,000.”(Document F).
The doctors were unsanitary. They didn’t wash their instruments at all. This caused diseases to quickly spread. But the doctors did a lot for the little amount of knowledge they knew about diseases and their lack of effective medicines. Hospitals were also unsanitary.
Some rights that we all have as citizens include: freedom to express ourselves, right to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Some of our responsibilities include, protecting the constitution, respecting and obeying laws, pay income and taxes, serve a jury when called, and the most important one is to defend the country if needs arise. The Romans were very big on these rights and responsibilities. They felt as if they all united under these rules, and nobody had more rights than others. The Romans followed these rules very strictly.
Ancient Rome had a well organized government that had many purposes that helped them create an amazing civilization. I studied 5 difference purposes of government to learn more about Ancient Rome. Those were the following: public services, protect rights, rule of law, prepare for a common defense, and support the economic system. The Roman Republic had amazing features.
Living in such an enormous empire had its benefits. As a Roman, you had education, culture and the protection of the largest military empire on your side. Living in this Empire also had some notable drawbacks. The empire had extreme poverty rates, threats of being in a constant state of war, and the government could impose huge tax burdens on the people.
