Have you ever heard the term, “curiosity killed the cat”? In the novel by Mary Shelly tiled Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus, it tells the story of a man that wishes to pursue and exceed in the sciences by creating a living being, or play God, without knowing how this action of the later abandoning this creation and allowing it to experience the world on his own, will affect him and his loved ones in the future. In this way, Mary Shelly uses the characterization of the character, Victor, and the conflicts that he encounters to convey that the pursuit of knowledge is a dangerous quest ; as shown by his lack of responsibility, the consequences of his actions, and his narcissism. Once Victor is met with the many deaths caused by his own creations, he tells his father, “William, Justine, and Henry - they all died by my hands” (192). Due to Victor being already mentally unwell at this moment, his father doesn’t ask for details about this shows how victor is someway, responsible for these deaths. This examines how this pursuit of knowledge in the end, was really posed as dangerous since people Victor knew died. Moving on, with Victor saying this, and somewhat realizing these consequences of his actions, he still does not want to bestow the truth to the real reason of such horrendous actions, to others. Victor tells himself, “But besides, I could not bring myself to disclose a secret which would fill my heater with consternation” (192). With this, it shows how such consequences do affect Victor’s thinking and that the pursuit of knowledge has led to this happening. Both instances show how trying to obtain knowledge like so and not thinking of the consequences, create a bigger problem and is or is eventually
