I identified most with the themes in the text Lady Freedom Among Us, by Rita Dove. This is because the main theme in this poem was to accept all into our communities, no matter what background they come from. America is a patchwork of different people with different backgrounds, and this poem best shows us that we must incorporate all people in to our society. Dove begins her poem by saying to the American people: "don’t lower your eyes/or stare straight ahead to where/you think you ought to be going…” (1-3). By addressing all of us and telling us not to walk away and pretend like we don’t care, we should take initiative to mingle with new people. It is equally important for us to converse with and listen to the needs of the poor as well as the financially well— both people have unique ideas and mindsets and must be respected. This American value is what makes all people feel respected and satisfied. As an active member in my community, I truly see a change when we begin to include all different aspects of humanity in our discussions. While I was volunteering at my local library, I noticed that we had community discussion events, when everyone got together once in a month to discuss a certain topic. These discussions opened the eyes of those serving the community, and as a result, many positive changes took place. Finally, near the end, Dove tells us that the poor lady discussed was “one of many/and she is each of us” (31-32). This quote resonates with me, because this summarizes the ideal i strongly believe in. We are all one, and those part of "us" deserve respect and must be given it by the citizens of that nation.
