In William Shakespere’s tragedy Macbeth, Lady Macbeth’s ambition and support of her husband's actions of murder makes her fall guilty.
In act 1, scene 7, Lady Macbeth’s husband, Macbeth is in a debate battle with his thoughts not knowing if he should kill King Duncan or leave him be. He has been dreaming about the killing of Duncan so he can become king and live his happiest life the way he always wanted. The act of murder seems crazy but Lady Macbeth thinks otherwise and instead makes a plan for Macbeth so he can execute it correctly, leaving no evidence behind. As Macbeth is in his head Lady Macbeth changes his mind and states, “And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man.” (Shakespeare 1.7.51-52). Lady Macbeth is being guilty in this situation because she is guiding the way and helping Macbeth in his plan to murder the king. She is serving him in every kind of way possible so he can succeed. In Act 5, Scene 1, Lady Macbeth is suffering from a mental disorder that causes her to sleepwalk at night. For the past couple days Lady Macbeth has entered with a candle in her hand deploring the deaths of Lady Macduff and Banquo. She claims to see blood on her hands but says nothing will ever wash it off. The doctor tries to help but claims he can not do anything but somebody needs to be watching over her at all times. As Lady Macbeth is uncontrollably rubbing her hands in a washing motion she calls out “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, Oh, Oh!” (Shakespeare 5.1.44-45). As a result, Lady Macbeth is recalling the deaths of Banquo, King Duncan, and Lady Macduff, finally admitting that she was involved in everything that Macbeth had done. She is manifesting the guilt of the murders committed and seems to be in a haze
