Ambition: Helpful or Harmful? Ambition is how far someone will go for something they really want. Someone with so much ambition can down spiral really quickly. How that person uses that power really determines on what that person wants. William Shakespeare was big on paying patronage to King James I who experienced treachery and betrayal. So Shakespeare wanted to please King James I and create Macbeth to show how prominent traits of fear, ambition, and guilt within Lady Macbeth can result in tragedy and ruin. She begins to sleepwalk, and all the while she mutters how the blood has stained her hands red. How she cannot take back the murderous actions she and her husband have committed. She still tries to be strong telling herself there is no reason to be afraid because the men are dead in the ground. Yet she continues to go on thinking strangely enough about the families of the ones she helped murder. She has remorse for her actions. She states:” The thane of fife had a wife. Where is she now...You mar all with the starting” (5.1.30-34). She begins to be sorry the quickly prevents herself from feeling repentance. She goes through this every night, confessing her troubled sins she committed, and goes back to sleep. She is filled with a guilt ridden conscious which is hurting her so sleep walking is the only way her body can cope with the horrific actions she has been exposed to. Fear, ambition, and guilt are shown as characteristics of Lady Macbeth in the play Macbeth written by Shakespeare to sow how too much ambition can turn into run. The play begins with Lady Macbeth having loads of ambition and being cruel but later on she transitions to have a quilt ridden, repentance conscious. She goes from motivating Macbeth to kill King Duncan in order to be king, to being too big of a coward to kill King Duncan, and finally to having dreams of contrition.
