This is symbolic, as it shows Lady Macbeth wants to bring death where she should give life. This is supernatural, as it is disrupting the natural order. This, paired with the quote "Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark," shows how she does not want to be seen, especially by a higher power. This once again shows the supernatural theme, as it implies the sinful nature of what will occur and suggests demonic forces disrupting her future actions. This would be especially prudent for a deeply religious Jacobean audience watching and, hence, would help create tension and unease in the audience as well as engage them in the plot.
This symbolizes Macduff. Once he hears that his wife and household were killed, he has renewed energy and he wants to kill Macbeth. A baboon is immature. Blood symbolizes life force, mortality, pain, and death. This is Lady Macduff’s son.
Since ancient times, the Aegean Sea has been a centerpiece for much rich cultural influence. This influence is seen in our architecture, exotic foods, old pottery, myths, and other things that have lasting effects on us. This fabulous place of mystery and wonder is what gives us most of our picture of Greece, Crete, and other surrounding islands: crystal clear, sparkling water around beautiful islands with lush green landscapes and ruins of old. In this project, I have delved into this and have come back with knowledge and connections of how Greece became the true birthplace of the West. Smaller islands, such as Santorini and Patmos, have been quiet in modern times but active in eras previous.
From the depths of 11th-century Scotland to modern-day literature, symbols are a recurring literary device used to convey the author's intent. Symbolism is a core element of theme development. In Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses several symbols to drive the themes. The three witches represent fate and destiny, light and darkness signify good and evil, and sleep symbolizes guilt. Although these symbols play a vital role in plot development, blood stands out as the most prominent symbol.
If the stars shine their light, his “black and deep desire” will be revealed to everyone. Because he knows that what he is about to do is immoral and no one should hear about it, Macbeth is compos mentis. “The eye wink at the hand” refer to Macbeth’s wanting to blind his eyes so that he will not have to see the actions he will be making. Macbeth have an emotional conflict because he knows he might regret his actions later on and he is afraid to see the outcome. Due to the concerns he is having, Macbeth is still sane because he thinks about it before committing the actions.
Throughout Macbeth, the motif of sleep serves as a literary device that foreshadows and reflects the characters struggles with guilt, madness, and
In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, the inclusion of sleep functions to represent innocence, revealing that innocence cannot be repaired once tarnished. Shakespeare develops the idea of innocence through withholding restful sleep from the Macbeth’s. This can be seen when Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking and being observed by the doctor “Lo you, here she comes”. This is her very guise and, upon my life, fast asleep. Observe her; stand close.”
In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, the author uses water as a symbol of power to separate one from his previous actions and their effects, contributing to the overall theme of losing control to ambition. After persuading Macbeth to kill Dunkin, the situation became out of control for lady Macbeth, who intended to have only the king killed, as Macbeth began to massacre whoever was believed to be a potential threat to his crown. Here, the water that she used during her sleepwalk symbolised her wish to “get the blood off her hands”. This is in line with the theme of how ambition gets out of control and eventually led to lady macbeth’s suicide as she can no longer withstand the guilt of indirectly murdering many innocent people.
Lady Macbeth, who while plotting the death of Duncan beckoned and begged darkness to surround while they were committing these deed, however the murder left her guilt ridden and made her begin to sleepwalk constantly, like she is under a spell, with a candle by her side. “[Enter Lady Macbeth, with a taper] / How come she by that light? / Why, it stood by her: she has light by her continually; `tis her command.” (5.1.17-19). This scene shows the drastic change in Lady Macbeth’s character and how now she is afraid of the darkness because of what it he turned her into.

The word “sleep” is used throughout Macbeth with various connotations. One of the ways to interpret Shakespeare's use of “sleep,” is as a symbol of innocence. This symbolism is used repeatedly in concerns to Duncan and his murder. When Lady Macbeth is unable to kill Duncan, she explains, “Had he not resembled / My father as he slept, I had done’t”
Sleepwalking "Since his majesty went into the field, I have seen her rise from her bed, throw her nightgown upon her, unlock her closet, take forth paper, fold it, write upon ’t, read it, afterwards seal it, and again return to bed; yet all this while in a most fast sleep" (5.1.3-7) Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking symbolizes the distress and psychological pain she is in. Since she demands Macbeth to kill innocent people, she becomes restless from guilt. According to Dream Dictionary, sleepwalkers are under a massive amount of stress and lack sleep. Lady Macbeth realizes she cannot escape the consequences of her actions, therefore she holds a lot of stress. Moreover, her eyes which remain open as she sleepwalks symbolize that she may never rest

Macbeth’s remorse becomes too strong as he can’t even sleep anymore, because the darkness reminds him of the evilness within him in the darkness. Macbeth recalls, “Methought I thought a voice cry- “sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep”- the innocent sleep” (2.2.47-8) Macbeth becomes paranoid, obsessive, and careless in his actions following his first murder.
The first example of a figurative sleep in Macbeth is spoken by Macbeth to Lady Macbeth. He, along with his wife, are
