In L’Avventura and “Lady with the Little Dog”, love is portrayed in different ways. L’Avventura depicts a more passionate fleeting type of love that is more along the lines of infatuation. “Lady with the Little Dog” shows a more lasting meaningful type of love. Sandro and Gurov are having affairs but the way they do it and the feelings that they have towards the women shows the difference in these two types of love.
Sandro and Gurov are similar because they had many affairs. These affairs never left a lasting impression of either of them. They were very passionate about these women for a short time but then it stopped. These women came and went but there was never real feelings for them. This is infatuation not love. It may have started as an affair much like Sandro’s but he developed real feelings for Anna. Gurov was constantly was thinking about Anna. He could not sleep because he was thinking about her. He wanted to be around her. He thought about her night and day until his life no longer had any meaning without her. He wanted to tell his partner at work about her. Towards the end of the story, Gurov starts to realize this love is different. He notices that he feels compassion for her and that he was in love. He says this love has changed them both. True love will change both of the people in the relationship. There is a balance in the relationship that has to be found and Gurov realizes that they both have changed. He loves her so much he does not want to have to hide their relationship anymore. He wants to start a new life with Anna. This is not infatuation. This is an enduring true love. This love keeps couples together. Sandro did not have that level of affection or attention for Anna or Claudia.
There are many types of love. I think these stories help us to figure out what they are. Love is a complicated. Examples of the different behaviors and types of love we can experience help us to determine what we have. We can learn more from reading and seeing an example of how people in love act.
