Did you know that the ladybug’s name is actually the ladybird? “They are called ladybirds because they can fly like birds”. www.factslist.net says. Its name originated from Britain, where the insects became known as “Our Lady’s bird” or the “Lady beetle”. Mary (Our Lady) was often depicted wearing a red cloak in early paintings and the spots of the seven spot ladybird were said to symbolise her seven joys and seven sorrows. Ladybugs are useful insects that eat aphids, and they have an average life cycle so that babies can be born.
