A Source of Inspiration

Discrimination is everywhere we go. In every single town, city, and village people are being discriminated against because of their religon, race, sexualty, ecnomic status, and many more. But also, while there are people who discriminate, there are also people who stand up. There are people who speak out against the bullies of our society. One of those people is Langston Hughes. He was very outspoken about the idea of racial pride. Langston Hughes expresses and promotes racial pride, though his works of writing, such as his poem, “I, too”. He wrote poems, short stories, lyrics for musicals and books. Because he published so many pieces, he was a crucial part in the literary movement, The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was one of the most influential movements in the history of America. ( Harlem Renaissance) One woman, Margaret Walker Alexander, was an African American poet and writer. She was a part of a literary movement in Chicago. She is well known for her award winning poem “For My People,”. She made a large impact on the literary movement she was involved in. She stated how to Harlem Renaissances had an effect on her. She stated, “As a small child in the 1920s, I was very much affected by the Harlem Renaissance. The president of New Orleans College, where my parents were teaching at that time, gave them a little booklet called "Four Lincoln Poets." They brought it home and gave it to me. Langston Hughes first impressed me then. I think it made all the difference in my life.” (My Idol was Langston Hughes) This information and quote shows how Langston Hughes Made a huge difference on people's lives, even after he passed away. He got many people involved in writing, and later these people went on to participate in other literary movements. Margaret Alexander was only one example.
