Through life, everyone even animals go through the evolution and growing up process. From infant all the way to the walk of a cane, aging is a process in our lives that everyone dreads going through. We all have to learn how to grow up and take on responsibilities that we as adults will face later on in our lives. “What Is It about 20-Somethings” by Robin Henig gives insight into the life of young adulthood and the phenomenon of adults being “stuck”. Whether people like it or not, you’re going to have to grow up and start your own life.
With the undeniable truth, everyone must age and grow older. Although this is a natural process of life, not everyone is accepting of this. At this age, being an older adult you face difficulties such as aging, sexuality, relationship dynamics and having to face reality that you are not in your prime as you once were. Heart attacks, strokes, and other ailments are examples of this. However, just as there younger counterparts they still able to do somethings they were able to do in their earlier stages.
Each year, day, and second, people gradually get more mature but it occurs quickly or gradually in various people. Maturity can be linked with a considerable amount of different things and it brings people to begin to act like adults. Maturity is not dependent on a person’s age because it depends on the person’s experiences in life and who they surround themselves with. People get more mature based off of their experiences in life.
Theories of late adulthood development are quite diverse in later adulthood than at any other age. They include self-theory, identity theory and stratification theory. The self-theory tries to explain the core self and search to maintain one’s integrity and identity. The older adults tend to integrate and incorporate their various experiences with their vision and mission for their respective community (Berger, 2008). Also, the older people tend to feel that their attitude, personalities and beliefs have remained in a stable state over their lives even as they acknowledge that physical changes have taken place in their bodies.
We all grow up from a young age, getting stronger and bigger, developing into an adult ready to face the world. As evolution has it, after a period of some years we have to stop growing physically as in general physical attributes. It’s a great idea to work with what you have and exercising regularly can change the physical and mental aspects for the better. It seems that when most of us reach a certain age, we stop growing mentally too. We hide away, we get stale, and our senses are non-existent.
A physical development in middle adulthood is about all situations of the gradual changes under way in early adulthood. Hair grays and thins, new lines appear on the face, less youthful body shape is evident, these are same changes in the middle adulthood but how past the time our body and physical changes. Aging can generally be described as the process of growing old and is a complex part of the life cycle. Basically aging is a multidimensional process and influence almost every aspect of human life. Scholars have been defined aging in various ways. Lemma (2014) by referring WHO (2004) report stated aging as ‘a normal biological process defined as those time-dependent, irreversible changes that lead to progressive loss of functional capacity after the point of maturity.’ These irreversible changes that the World Health Organization listed include ‘physiological, psychological and social that is progressive, decrement and irreversible, of structural and functional body organs.’
While researching developmental theories for middle adulthood, I kept in mind some common stereotypes that people think of for this stage of life; declining in one’s physical shape and cognitive performance, trying to gain a sense of purpose in life, etc.
Aging can be seen as a process where the organisms proceed through a physical deterioration in the body and the process takes place in a very unique manner depending on the individual. It can be said as a multi-dimensional aging process where the individual’s functional and health condition were influenced by many factors such as environmental, genetic or even cultural factors. And these are the factors which will result in emotional, cognitive, social, physical and also psychological changes. The event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood would not be the incarceration of my mom, but the time following. After my mother was incarcerated for drunk driving and possession of narcotics I was assumed to be the primary caregiver of my two sisters.
