Archetypes: The Key to all Literature Characters, almost every book there is has at least one, though there are some repeating of character types or characteristics that they might share. This is called an archetype, it’s basically a typical character or an action/situation that represents patterns of human nature. An archetype could also be a universal symbol, a theme, or it could even be a setting. Overall, to better understand literature, one must be able to recognize archetypes.

There are many similarities between the conflicts in “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Téllez and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty. “Lather” is a short story about a barber in the South American revolution who is secretly working as an informer for the revolutionaries and is presented with the opportunity to kill one of his worst enemies, Captain Torres, a leader in the revolution. Although he is only an informer and a barber, he has Captain Torres’ life in his hands and ponders whether to kill or not kill him, but in the ends lets him go unharmed. This relates to the theme because in life, there will be conflicts and one should be calm and make the right decision. The barber shows his internal conflict;“I was stropping my best razor, and when I recognized him, I started to shake.” This showed fear ,and Predicament.

Pino is a racist person who does not like black people and does not get along with Mookie. In contrast, Vito is a nice and respectful individual who is friends with Mookie. In the novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, main character Billie Jo faces several challenging obstacles throughout her lifetime. Getting through these obstacles is the only way Billie Jo can learn to forgive her father as well as herself for their mistakes. Once she learns to stop feeling resentful, and let go, Billie Jo will be able to grow up. The first major challenge Billie Jo faces is when a fire breaks out in her home. The fire ignites when Billie Jo’s mother mistakes a pail of kerosene for water, where,“instead of making coffee, Ma [makes] a rope of fire”(87).
In Kirsten Greenidge’s Milk Like Sugar, the protagonist, Annie Desmond, struggles between falling into the toxic cycle of teenage pregnancy that surrounds her and her desire to seek out a better, more fulfilling life. In the course of the play, Annie takes many actions that help drive the plot. A major Action What occurs when Annie confronts her mother. They act different and think different, but in some ways they also act and think the same. Where there are differences there are also similarities.
Round character in the story definitely would be Louise Mallard because she is fully developed and has a lot of emotions throughout the story. As I mentioned, she had a terrible time during her marriage time because she has no freedom and etc. However, as soon as she heard Brently died in train accident, she was shocked but mostly enjoyed it because she got a freedom and eventually died because of her joy. Because the story reveals a lot of her feelings in terms of freedom, developed and changed; she is a round character. The protagonist of the story is Mrs. Mallard.
“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei.
