Laura Ingalls Biography Laura Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867, into the dirt poor, warm hearted Ingalls family. She grew up in a fabulous home full of chores, tons and tons of daily grind , but also scruples and memories that she would one day write about. Her parents coached her through all of the hard knocks and the customs of pioneering life and she was quite proficient in her studies. Other than the impolite girl Nellie, everyone was wonderfully cordial to Mary and Laura. Laura got excellent grades year after year until she was sixteen, she decided to be a teacher. She studied her brains out and then took a test. If she passed it, she would qualify as a teacher! She passed the test with flying colors, and even received a document saying “You are a teacher”. Changes were ahead for Laura though, because she would be teaching at a school that was a little bit out of town. Her Pa couldn’t drive her to the new, little schoolhouse and back every day, so Laura’s former teacher’s brother Almanzo agreed to do it. Almanzo was beginning to fall in love with Laura, but he was almost 10 years older than her, and she was only sixteen!Laura expressed that she loved him too, and they resolved to become married. Pa thought separately , and resolved that Laura was too juvenile to marry. He confessed to Laura and Almanzo that they would have to delay their marriage until Laura was age 18.. Laura and Almanzo were super pessimistic and they disagreed with Pa, but they waited 2 years just like he said and then blissfully married. Almanzo had assembled a lovely house for Laura, and she was profoundly contented with it. What Laura didn't know was that Almanzo had taken out a huge loan to build the house and that they were in really bad debt because of it. When he finally told her, they both decided together that it would be best to take out a mortgage on their house. Laura and Almanzo loved each other, but stuff like that was really hard for them. They were still in financial danger, sometimes Indians would come and panic them demanding for foodstuff, They even lost a newborn boy, their first ever son!
