When reading the first four chapters of the novel “The Wave,” I have identified the different opinions among the characters. Specifically, Laurie's and David’s. Laurie, one of the teenage girls in the novel, showed a large interest in the Holocaust and how nobody stood up against the Nazi Forces, especially the Germans. Hence Laurie's thoughts, she explained aloud “How could the Germans sit back while the Nazi’s slaughtered people all around them and say they didn’t know about it? How could they do that? How could they even say that?” Mr.Ross’s response was “All I can tell you is that the Nazi Forces were organized and feared… we just don’t know the answers.” At the beginning before the war began, the Nazi Forces were a minority. As well as why did they let this happen. Why did it go so far? In addition, we have realized what Laurie’s thoughts are on this. However, let’s take a look at David’s opinion on what happened. At lunch David noticed that Laurie was a bit off and asked her “What is it?” “That film?” Laurie replied, “It really bothers me, doesn’t it bother you?” David thought for a moment, “Yeah, sure as something horrible happened that happened once, it bothers me.” “But that was a long time ago Laurie, to me it’s a piece of History. You can’t change what happened.” Now that we have seen both of these characters views on this, it’s safe to say that Laurie has a much stronger feeling towards the Holocaust and what tragic thing that the Nazi’s did. David clearly explains that he cares about it, however, he knows that it happened and that there is no way of changing that.
