The lava lamp is a heat-powered lamp which was made in 1963. This paper discusses how a lava lamp works and how to make one at home.
The liquid motion lamp, otherwise known to most people as the lava lamp, was created in England in 1963 by Edward Craven Walker. Craven Walker’s original version of the lava lamp was called the Astro Lamp. After Craven Walker had been selling the Astro Lamp for two years, he sold the United States manufacturing rights to a company in Chicago named Lava Lite. After the lava lamp was sold in the United States, it became very popular with young people and hippies in the 1960s and 1970s. Lava lamps were especially popular in college dorms.

At the bottom of the bottle is a light bulb that makes the wax and water glow. A lava lamp works because the light bulb heats up the wax, causing it to expand and rise …show more content…

This paper will discuss two different methods. Both methods of making a lava lamp at home use oil and water because they do not mix. That is because water is denser than oil. This means the molecules in water are closer together than the molecules of oil. A water molecule has a negative charge on one side and on the other side, a positive charge. The negative charge on one molecule attracts the positive charge on a different molecule, and the positive charge on one molecule attracts the negative charge on a different molecule. This happens again and again until all the molecules are close together in one area. Oil, on the other hand, is non-polar. This means it has no charges, so the molecules do not get close together, and that is why oil is not dense. When oil and water are mixed, the denser water always goes to the bottom and the less dense oil always goes to the
