Robert Morris' “Untitled (Mirrored Cubes)” is a prime example of what Public Art represents. Four mirrored cubes are displayed in different locations and are symmetrically placed. With this category of art, it is quite hard to define and truly explain what exactly is Public Art. In the “Coming in from the Cold” reading by Cameron Cartier, he defines Public Art as “art outside of museums and galleries and must fit within at least one of the following categories” (15). Within those categories he discusses how the art can be placed accessible or visible to the public, how it affects the community or individual, and how its maintained or used by community. Tying back to Morris' mirrored cubes, it appears that the cubes are relocated multiple …show more content…

Mirrors are accustomed to be used as a reflection product so that we see ourselves or even others, we are on display. But with this sculpture, the mirrors are placed in cubes where each side, there is a reflection that could be seen. Whether it is of the location that is presented at (gallery, wall, flooring, grass, trees, ourselves), it gets the audience to start analyzing the piece in a new perspective. All of these elements are appearing in front of us but it is how we interpret it to ourselves is where the real meaning begins. We can take it literally and see the flooring and the white walls and the reflection of the other cubes. Or we can see the way the edges of the white walls intersect with the other cubes and how the cubes tend to camouflage with its surroundings yet they are still able to stand out and be a beautiful piece of art. This could be a metaphor for how we view ourselves when we look at our appearance in the mirror. We see exactly what our brain tells us and not our eyes. We do not see the beautiful geometric cubes or the light glistening on the edges of the cubes. We tend to focus more on how we are not unique enough or how we are bland and boring or look a certain way that does not meet societies standards. By having the mirrors all around the cube, the audience can not only view the beautiful art, but they …show more content…

We decided to have it be somewhat site specific and had three mirrors, one on the bottom with the glass facing upward and two others creating an “L” onto the bottom mirror. We then aligned candles all on the bottom mirror and lit them up. Once the candles were lit, it tripled the light and the candles looked almost ritual like and had a memorial vibe to it. We dimmed the lights and started added melted crayons onto the candles to add more color the the project. Once the class was interpreting our creation, they all said the similar idea of how the candles add a intimate yet intriguing connection for the audience since it was small. Some said although we are surrounded by so many others that are exactly like us, we are still able to stand out and show what lights us up even though we may not show it openly. Others described it as almost religious like with the dim lighting and the intimate small placing of the candles and mirrors that it almost felt as though there was a prayer in session. Depression contributed to the idea and how although we have dark times in our lives and it feels like it is consuming us, there is always that shed of bright light and hope and positivity that lingers in us to keep moving
