Another painting that really appeals to me was painted by Jan van Eyck in 1434, The Arnolfini Portrait. It could be considered secular subject matter as it portrays everyday life, but it also features religious symbolism and meaning. Prayer beads hang by the mirror, and the mirror has a border featuring scenes from Christ's Passion. One candle in the chandelier may represent God. Its interpretation is affected by how closely you look at the subject matter and composition as there are so many details and symbols shown. The mirror and the writing above the mirror which is the artist’s signature is a major key to the painting. The color scheme is symbolic and the warmer colors tend to draw the eye in to the painting.
