While this suggests that good people can stay genuine after making bad decisions, this is not the case when it comes to Friar Laurence in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In this essay, we will explore all the reasons that show why Fr. Laurence is not the good person that he seems to be. Friar Laurence is ultimately the one to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, this is because he was well aware that it was preposterous to marry them so rapidly, he had major involvement in faking Juliet’s death, and he fled the scene at Juliet’s tomb. He risked marrying them anyway, even though he knew that there would be a dreadful consequence for everyone involved. As he dreaded, both families discovered he married them, this then led them to love one another even more, which then ultimately lead to the tragedy of them killing themselves. Friar Laurence's role in faking Juliet's death led to them killing themselves. When he gives her the potion, he says, "Take thou this vial... And this distilled liquor drink thou off" (4.1 93-93). This quote shows that Friar Laurence only wanted to make it seem as if Juliet had died, so she did not have to marry Paris on Wednesday. However, he failed to inform Romeo of the plan on time so when Juliet woke up, Romeo, who thought she was truly dead, had already poisoned himself. This then causes Juliet to choose death and take her own life rather than having to live without Romeo. Friar Laurence fleeing the scene at Juliet's tomb was the final event that led to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. He tells Juliet "I dare no longer stay" (5.3 159).
