Aeneas The Leader Our Culture Needs The ancient epic poems depict the values of the culture at the time. The writers of the time made an effort to depict their way of life especially all the values they held. Virgil is not exception, as he wrote about the Roman values in The Aeneid, or what is known as Romanitas. Aeneas is the main character in Virgil’s The Aeneid, which tells the journey of Aeneas to get to his promised land. In the epic poem by Virgil, Aeneas does not find himself alone in this journey, in fact he is the leader of the Trojans during the time after the Trojan war. Aeneas experiences instances where he had to act as the great leader people expected him to be. Aeneas kept his integrity to his people, his family, and the gods. A leader like Aeneas would make a world of difference for current American society. The United States is facing a time when the leaders are not acting with integrity. Current leaders are influenced by money and material possessions when making important decisions that affects the rest of the country. Currently, society is facing a crisis where leaders are not honest and do not hold themselves accountable according to their morals. Many leaders’ integrity is shattered by the pressures of leading and at times by greed. For example, the water crisis in Flint Michigan could have been avoided if those in charge did their jobs correctly. As reported by Merrit Kennedy form the National Public Radio, the water crisis in Michigan started when “The state's Department of Health and Human Services had the data, according to investigators, but failed to properly analyze it. The city's emergency managers were the ones who made the decision to switch water sources and presided over the change”.
