The role of trust and loyalty for a positive leader/follower relationship is not something that is created overnight. For some individuals, loyalty and trust is almost nonexistent. There are some individuals that go to work every day, complete the tasks that they are assigned, but do not want any type of relationship with their leader or manager. Other individuals have the need to feel wanted and will build a relationship with their leader. Why would an individual want to get close to someone they work with or for? Some feel that is the best way to get them to open up and listen to their thoughts and ideas. They feel that once a connection is made, they may feel more comfortable presenting them with a more complex issue. Leaders are not born leaders. They were once followers to other leaders who shaped them into the leaders they are now. Not only are they leaders now, but they are still followers to other leaders or to their subordinates. This will not create a healthy relationship between the leader and the follower. There is a difference between bringing up something that was overheard to a leader that could be illegal or unethical, and small talk that every business has. Both the leader and the follower need to trust in one another not to let the small talk disrupt their work ethics and keep their relationship professional. Kevin will break up the monotony of the day with small talk because that is who he is a manager.
